The human genome consists of 3 x 109 base pairs.
Only 2-4% of the human DNA is coding (codes for structural proteins). Prior to February 2001, it was though that the human genome contained between 70.000 and 120.000 genes. Initial results from the human genome project, suggest that the human genome codes as few as 30.000 genes.
The rest is junk-DNA, centromere- and telomere-DNA.
