A typical example og neurotransmitter regulated transcription is the Long-Therm Potentiaton, LTP which is the basics for our ability to remember.

The neurotransmitter used is glutamate. Glutamate activates a special type of receptors, called NMDA-receptors, which is followed by influx of Na⁺ and Ca⁺⁺. The influx of Ca⁺⁺ activates two types of protein kinases.

Some evidence indicates that these Ca⁺⁺- activated proteins may trigger changes in gene expression that lead to increased protein synthesis and production of more postsynaptic glutamate receptors.
